Spoke with Lisa Sandell on 1/29/26 about Faculty Research Grants (FRGs)

These are internal grants at ULSD, primarily meant for physicians. I have a fair bit of discretion on the overall process.

Joan Scott will help oversee these on the financial side.

Rich Lamont is temp Dean of Research, will need to be looped in on committee meetings and decisions.

We will review grants 2x per year, MR will set the due dates. He will contact Paige Moore to update the ULSD website with the info and grant form. Lisa Sandell sent files including the grant form template to include on the website for applicants. https://louisville.edu/dentistry/departments/oralhealth/ulsd-faculty-research-grant

Once a due date is set, give at least 2-3 weeks after submission deadline to convene a research committee meeting to discuss reviews of the grant. MR will send out grant applications to the entire committee + Rich. Expect 2-3 applications per cycle.

Grants must be evaluated and corrective instruction given to applicants that need it. For more meritorious grants we can rank them and directly send to Rich. At the end of the process if someone can make quick revisions and resubmit, MR will evaluate the grant amendments, if the faculty take too long (more than 1 month) MR will instruct them to reapply next cycle.

A ranked list gets passed to Rich, they decide how many to fund based on funds available at that time.

MR will write an award letter (based on previous from Lisa). Award letter should indicate a 1 year deadline to use up funds. Faculty are encouraged to report all publications derived from these funds back to MR.

Minutes of the grant review committee meeting need to be sent to the Dean, Connie Rough and Jennifer Malone.
